Private Autism Assessment Wolverhampton

If you're exploring an autism assessment for you, your child, or someone close to you, it's natural to have questions. At AG & Co Health, we offer private autism assessments at our Wolverhampton clinic that carefully and thoroughly explore the experiences you and your family may have.

You don't need to have all the answers. But if you're ready to take the next step, we're here to listen.

How an autism assessment can help you make sense of your experiences

In our experience, considering an autism assessment doesn't begin with certainty. It begins with wanting to understand yourself or your child better.

Perhaps your child finds it hard to accept changes in their routine, becomes overwhelmed in busy places, or communicates differently to other children around them. As an adult, maybe you look back at your own childhood and recognise many of these experiences too, and how they've carried into your adult life.

Autism (also widely referred to as ASD or ASC - Autism Spectrum Condition) is a broad, neurodevelopmental condition that affects many areas of a person's life, from social interaction and communication styles to sensory processing and routine habits. There are widely recognised symptoms and some that are less common. Because each individual's experience is different, an in-depth, professional autism assessment is needed to fully diagnose and support them.

There can be real value in having an autism assessment, regardless of the outcome:

  • Understand your own or your child's strengths and challenges more clearly
  • Make sense of experiences or patterns that may have been difficult to explain before
  • Understand whether autism could be part of the picture, rather than continuing to wonder
  • Identify areas where extra support or adjustments may be helpful at home, school, or work
  • Find practical recommendations based on your individual experiences and needs
  • Feel more confident about what your next steps could look like

Waiting for an NHS assessment in Wolverhampton?

If you're exploring an autism assessment for yourself or your child, you may already have spoken to your child's school or your GP for a local autism assessment referral.

For children and young people, where ADHD and autism support was once available through CAMHS mental health services, this local route has recently changed due to increased service demand. Since 1 August 2026, Black Country Children's CAMHS now only accepts referrals for autism assessments in Wolverhampton and the surrounding area where a child also has significant mental health needs. Families are now asked to speak to their GP about other options. These include another local NHS or council service, an NHS-funded Right to Choose referral, or a private assessment.

To cater to different needs, these assessments may involve a wide team, including clinical psychologists, speech and language therapists, and other specialists who work together to understand the full picture.

However, in Wolverhampton and across the country, these waiting times can take many months, leaving you with questions about how you can realistically access support at home, at school, or at work.

A private assessment is another option you can explore. You don't need a GP referral to book with AG & Co Health. If you're considering a private assessment, you're welcome to ask us any questions first. We provide a free consultation to share more information without you having to commit to anything. Alternatively, you can call our number on 07849582010 or contact us online.

What happens during the assessment?

At AG & Co Health, our autism assessments move at a comfortable pace. We'll explain what to expect and give you plenty of opportunity to ask questions. The aim of the assessment process is to focus not on individual traits alone, but on building a fuller picture of your own or your child's experiences.

Your autism assessment may involve:

  • Getting to know you or your child: We explore the experiences that have brought you here, alongside strengths, needs, and any questions you would like the process to help answer.
  • Understanding your life: We'll talk about early development and experiences across different parts of life, such as home, school, work, relationships, and sensory environments.
  • Gathering different perspectives: We may ask for additional input using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) with someone who knows the person well to explore early development and help us understand patterns over time.
  • An observational assessment: The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) uses conversation and structured activities to help us understand aspects of communication and social interaction.
  • Reviewing everything together: We consider all the information gathered to understand whether autism best explains the experiences discussed.

We'll always aim to make adjustments as needed and take things at your pace. We use specific tools in line with NICE guidelines and DSM-5 criteria, along with information to help us fully understand how you experience the world. If ADHD or another condition could also be relevant, we'll consider the wider picture rather than assuming that every experience relates to autism.

What you come away with afterwards

The assessment may lead to an autism diagnosis, or it may suggest that autism does not best explain the experiences you've described. But we will still schedule a time to discuss the outcome with you in depth. You'll have an opportunity to discuss the findings and ask questions about what they mean.

You'll also receive a written report explaining the assessment findings and recommendations, which are intended to help you understand what support or adjustments may be helpful for you or your child.

Most patients receive their diagnostic report within two weeks of their assessment.

Questions we're asked about our local autism services

  • Can I have a private autism assessment while on an NHS waiting list?

You can explore a private assessment while you're waiting for NHS support. However, if you or your child already have an active NHS referral, we recommend speaking to your GP or the service managing that referral before taking any next steps. This gives you an opportunity to understand how choosing a private assessment could affect your current NHS referral and any support available afterwards.

  • Do I need a GP referral to book with AG & Co Health?

One of the benefits of a private assessment is that you don't need a GP referral. You can contact AG & Co Health directly without speaking to your GP first. If you're unsure whether an assessment is the right next step, you can begin with a free consultation and ask any questions you have about the process.

  • How much does an adult or child autism assessment cost?

At AG & Co Health, our autism assessments cost £1,500 for adults, children, or teenagers. This fee covers the full assessment process, including the clinical assessment, a review of the information gathered, and a detailed written report with our findings and recommendations. We know that choosing a private assessment is a big decision, so if you'd like to understand what's involved before committing, you're welcome to contact us before going ahead or visit our fees page for more information.

  • Will my GP or my child's school receive the report?

Our assessments are strictly confidential, so they won't be shared with anyone else, including your child's school or GP, unless you want to. In many cases, sharing an autism diagnosis with schools or workplaces can give you access to reasonable adjustments and support that help you or your child throughout life. It's a big decision, so we can help you understand what this support could look like and provide advice where you need it.

  • Can an assessment consider both autism and ADHD?

Autism and ADHD symptoms can sometimes overlap, and it's possible to have both (known as AuDHD). If ADHD appears relevant to the questions that brought you or your child to the assessment, tell us during your initial conversation, and we'll explain the most suitable path forward. That might include a combined autism and ADHD assessment.

  • How can I prepare for my first appointment?

You don't need to prepare specific answers, as an autism assessment isn't treated like a test. We'll always aim to go at your own pace and explain each step first. The most helpful thing is to think about the experiences that led you to consider an assessment in the first place. We may ask for input from people close to you or your child, or for supportive documents such as school reports, where they are relevant. We'll always let you know what information is needed before your appointment so you know what to expect.
